Early Stage Intervention

With the housing crisis and spectre of climate change, our industry requires effective tools to help expedite the construction of residential buildings. RJC knows that developers and designers often need to rely on “back of the envelope” preliminary calculations to quickly explore various design possibilities and understand if a design, or even a project, is viable under current market and regulatory constraints.

RJC has a substantial repository of data derived from our extensive experience in residential building design. Drawing on this vast resource, we created our RJC Aspire tool, which uses the physics of building science to produce immediate and easily-understandable outcomes of preliminary stage design choices. Our tool promptly provides feedback on a given design’s likely ability to meet project operational energy and carbon goals.

RJC Aspire enables teams to make early data-driven, carbon conscious design choices: the best and most cost-effective way to successfully achieve carbon reduction goals.

Achieving Targets

This tool is focused on Part 3 residential buildings, and can be used for new construction or retrofits. With a few concept level inputs about massing, window to wall ratio, enclosure assemblies and mechanical and electrical systems, RJC Aspire will calculate common regulatory operational energy and carbon performance metrics (i.e. TEDI, TEUI, GHGI). Clients will benefit from a user-friendly, intuitive tool that verifies whether a proposed design meets required building performance targets, and helps optimize the design to even higher levels of performance.

Integrated Design Process

RJC Aspire is a user-friendly solution that delivers rapid estimates from minimal effort. Customizing this tool for a specific project takes only minutes, and provides quick, real-time feedback. This process can be conducted during working meetings with the design team or in more extensive design workshops with client involvement. Thanks to its ability to produce quantified results and drive design at early stages, RJC Aspire lends itself to projects following integrated design processes.

Holistic Carbon Analysis

Currently under construction: we’re busy at work on an even better version of RJC Aspire! In our quest to further evolve ourselves and our industry in climate smart construction, we’re applying our “creative thinking, practical results” mindset to incorporating concept stage embodied carbon planning into the Aspire tool. Unlike traditional tools that focus either on operational carbon or embodied carbon, our next version of RJC Aspire will adopt a holistic approach by considering both embodied and operational carbon emissions. Integrating our structural, building enclosure, and building performance know-how into a single tool, our next version of RJC Aspire will facilitate even greater reductions in the carbon footprint of buildings. The operational carbon component of the tool has already demonstrated success with clients, and we are excited about what we will offer next. Stay tuned!
