The $367M Interior Heart and Surgical Centre (IHSC) in Kelowna is the newest addition to Kelowna General Hospital, providing a permanent home for the hospital’s cardiac program, a state of the art surgical unit, and a cardiac revascularization program.

The four-storey facility is home to 15 large state-of-the-art operating rooms, including two dedicated cardiac operating rooms and a hybrid operating room—just the second of its kind in the province. The building also includes surgical support services, the cardiac surgical intensive care unit, a new and expanded central sterilization medical device reprocessing department, and a pre and post-operative care unit.

Certified LEED® Gold, the building showcases the use of BC timber products in a healthcare setting, in accordance with BC’s Wood First Act.

Wood is used extensively throughout the facility as both a structural and a decorative element, promoting a warm and natural aesthetic that supports the form and function of the Centre as a facility dedicated to the healing and well-being of its patients and medical staff.

This building is incorporated between numerous adjoining buildings in the Kelowna Hospital precinct. The exterior wall consists of horizontal bands of thermally broken glazing and a variety of exterior insulated cladding materials on thermally broke girts. The base of the building is clad with brick, while the upper portions are clad with panels of treated cedar.

Metal panels with a wood grain finish were used where limited by proximity to existing buildings.
