RJC and PCL upgrade Edmonton Airport’s departures roadway

On Oct. 31, Edmonton International Airport (EIA) reopened its departures roadway and ramp, following 13 months of closure for construction. The project’s completion, ahead of schedule, anticipates the busy holiday travel season.
Over the course of the life-cycle replacement project, RJC Engineers and PCL Construction helped EIA upgrade infrastructure, increase accessibility with enhanced crosswalks, add safety features (including bollards in front of the terminal) and enable greater traffic flow by expanding the reconstructed exit ramp from one to two lanes.
“Our team is proud to have contributed to this project that seamlessly combines functionality with durability,” says Frank Cavaliere, managing principal for RJC in Edmonton. “Our commitment to fusing the practical with the imaginative was demonstrated through engineering solutions that not only enhance safety and accessibility, but also contribute to the passenger experience.”
The enhanced departures roadway has been re-established as a complimentary drop-off area for passengers, while the arrivals roadway returns to its function as a paid, short-term pick-up area. Complimentary pick-up and alternative drop-off will continue to be available at an area—now called ‘Arrivals Free’—that was established for the project east of the parkade.
The remaining new infrastructure that was added to account for the closure of the departures roadway—including a park-and-wait area and a family loading and unloading zone—continue to be accessible to the public for free.
